Influential Purchasing
I enjoyed discussing the different aspects of advertising from chapter three. The wide variety of ads mkae it possible for so much imagination, concepts, and focus that go into them. What I found interesting was the different types of hooks, not only in the book, but the ad we discussed that you showed from the internet. For instance, the young model on a horse on the beach holding a bottle of old spice. That stuff has been around forever but nobody wants to see a seventy year old guy on that horse because that's unattractive. An ad has to jump out at you and catch your attention or you will just change the channel or turn the page.

Sherman Alexie Second Post
I like the fact that in the first part of the novel Roudy is always there supporting and encouraging Junior. No matter how apprehensive Junior is, Roudy is there for him.
Sherman Alexie First Post - Cartoon Analysis
I chose (The Shroud of Kentucky Fried Chicken) pg. 8. This particular cartoon sums up the fact that a simple piece of chicken will taste as good or better than anything on the planet if you haven't had anything to eat for a long time. When people are that poor everything is going to taste a lot better than it would normally.
Visual analysis of advertisment #2
I chose this ad because I have been wearing Vans since I was young.
The hook is that Vans swhoes are cool.
1. The first photo makes it seem like these are the shoes to get because they are on a platform with the light shining on them. The second photo shows the pattern of the shoes in the first photo in the background. Maybe it is to attract the attention of the consumer.
2. The man in the ad connects to the product because he looks young and most of the younger crowd wear Vans. It is important that a younger person is in the ad because if it were a senior citizen the ad wouldn't be as credible.
3. Personally I don't get the skull in the background.
4. The target audience is younger people who want to look cool even if they are not into skateboarding.

Visual analysis of advertisement #1
STOLICHNAYA, flavored Russian vodka.
I picked this ad because of the look in the girl's eyes.
The hook is beauty and the target audience is people twenty-one and over.
#1 Young women like to have a drink of vodka with someone.
#2 The target audience is men. I expect to see this ad in higher class magazines. It is effective because the ad is pictured in a bar with drinks that more than likely have vodka in them.
#3 The women are looking across the bar or room hoping that someone will come drink with them. The ad promotes a young, single, fun, and curious lifestyle. The implied promise is to experiment to find out what you like.
#4 The text says to try the product if you haven't becuase you might like it. The text is basically directed to anyone that wants to drink that brand of vodka but reader is more than likely young men that go out to the bar scene to meet beautiful women.
